When you boot up the Live DVD, it will run tests and detect your graphics card setting. If you are using ATI/nVidia 3D graphics card, it will prompt you to install the proprietary drivers. You will need to hook on your LAN cable if you want to play multiplayer games.

Archiving Floppy Disks Using Images

We all have a stack of floppies sitting around that none of us ever use, but which we can't bare to throw away because we know that as soon as we do, we will miss them. On top of that, we also know that the lifetime of a floppy is very short; even if you do have a place to store all your floppies, odds are good that eventually the bits on them will go bad anyway. This mini-tutorial offers a technique you can use to archive your floppies onto more durable media, such as your hard drive or a CD-ROM, in a manner that allows you to reconstruct any of the floppies at a later time.

Often, it is not enough just to back up the files on a floppy. Sometimes the exact arrangement of data blocks on the disk are important. When backing up a commercial floppy, for example, it is usually best if you can create a bit-for-bit copy of the original. The techniques illustrated in this document achieve this goal.
Floppy disk images

All of the data on your floppy, including the files, the directory tables, etc. can be represented in a single file called an "image." Images are useful because they encapsulate the entire structure of a disk without regard to what is actually on the disk. Thus, images can be used to represent disks of various formats.

Unfortunately, the techniques described in this document work only with 31/2 inch high density (1.44 Mb) disks. However, they can be adapted for other types of disks if you know the correct parameters. Some formats that might not work with the techniques described in this document include Macintosh and the special format Microsoft used to distribute copies of Windows 95. (If you figure out the correct parameters for these formats, let me know so that I can include them here.)
Reading images

There are various commercial utilities available for DOS and Windows that can read floppy disk images. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any of them that are free. If you use Linux, however, the process is quite easy and no commercial software is required. Simply put your disk in the drive and execute the following command:

dd if=/dev/fd0 of=floppy.img count=1 bs=1440k

Of course, you can replace floppy.img with the file name that you want the extracted image to have.

When the command completes, you will have a single file on your hard drive representing the entire disk. This file, called an "image," can be used to reconstruct the floppy at any given time. From this point, you just need to keep the file on your hard drive, write it a CD-ROM or tape, or preserve it in any other way you feel appropriate. Note that you can fit more than 400 floppy images on a single CD_ROM. (That'll save a lot of space!) As long as you can keep the images safe, you can dispose of the original floppies, and reconstruct them later if it ever turns out you need them.
Writing images

Red Hat, Inc. has published a DOS utility you can use to write floppy disk images back to floppy disks. It's call rawrite.exe and is included on any Red Hat Linux CD-ROM. Since it is freely redistributable, I am happy to offer you a copy of the program and its documentation. It's really quite simple to use. Just run it and follow the prompts.

If you are running Linux, the command to restore an image to the floppy is:

dd if=floppy.img of=/dev/fd0 count=1 bs=1440k

where floppy.img is, of course, the name of your archived image file

Linux From USB The Easy Way With UNetbootin

If there’s one thing we love nearly as much as our games here at TTB, it’s Linux. Another thing that I personally am pretty big on is installation from a USB thumb drive, for which I’ve written some guides (the latest one being here). Pretty handy if you have a netbook without an optical drive, or if you just want to save on CD-Rs.

Just lately, though, I discovered this little app called UNetbootin, a free download which fully automates the process of creating bootable Linux USB sticks under Windows or Linux. For most distributions it also supports the creation of LiveUSB versions, which allow the user to try the distro out prior to installation, much like their well-known LiveCD counterparts.

I’d write out a guide here, but this really is so painfully easy to use that it’s not really needed. I’ll outline the steps required here though, just for clarity:

* Format your USB stick (optional but I like to just in case)
* Run UNetbootin and select desired distro and version
* Click OK
* Sit back and wait a few minutes while the stick is prepared
* Reboot, and set BIOS to boot from USB…

…That’s it!

It also allows custom kernel parameters and the use of custom initrd files for strange hardware setups, but you probably won’t ever need to touch this. The app will even create a bootable USB from an ISO file if your desired distro isn’t listed, but I found that function to be a bit hit-and-miss.

All that’s required for UNetbootin is a USB stick (1GB and above is best) and a reasonably fast internet connection, as it needs to download all of the installation files for your chosen distribution as part of the automated process. That said, it’s actually more economical with bandwidth than downloading a whole ISO in most cases.

So, if you’ve ever wanted to try out lots of Linux distributions in a short amount of time with the minimum of hassle, or just install Ubuntu on your EeePC without messing around, UNetbootin is definitely the app for you. It’s not just for Linux either - it even allows you to try out the popular BSD-based systems FreeBSD and NetBSD too!

How to install Acronis True image on UBCDv4

1. Create the Acronis bootable cd as an iso image (or burn it to a cd) - I am using the "full" bootable as opposed to the "safe" bootable cd (i havent tried that yet)
2. From the iso image extract the files from the recovery manager folder and save them somewhere
3. Extract the ubcd files from the iso image
4. Copy the acronis files into the ubcd\custom directory (I saved them in ubcd\custom\acronis)
5. Edit custom.cfg so that the entry for true image reads as follows

People seems to be loving the new Ubuntu and I believe it’s time to learn how you can install Ubuntu 8.10 using a USB flash drive. The new feature “Carry on a USB” allows you to install Ubuntu via USB instead of CD. Follow the following steps from PenDriveLinux and you will be good to go.

1. First of all format your USB flash drive from your PC in FAT32. You can do that by right clicking it and selecting format.
2. Now, to execute it DOWNLOAD the Ubuntu 8.10 convertion script. Once done a new folder “Ubuntu810” will be created.
3. Place the Ubuntu 8.10 ISO in the Ubuntu810 folder.

Nexuiz is a completely free first-person shooter game which somewhat resembles the Quake 3 gameplay. It was released in 2005 and the current version is now 2.4.2, which comes included in the Debian repositories.

Although I did not play Nexuiz more than a few times before, I was surprised to see how well I can perform in DM games. I think Nexuiz is one of the games which can be learned very easy if you're used to games like Quake. It's very fast paced, but it can look a little too crowded on small maps with over 10 players and fragging does not necessarily need skill, instead fragging and moving cleverly around in order to avoid another 3-4 players around you does need. In fact, this is actually happening with any FPS unless an appropriate map is selected depending on the number of players.The interface is futuristic, and all the settings can be easily changed without having to search in bloated menus. Since I use the ESDF keys for movement, I had no trouble finding the configuration options, and I also switched the default resolution to 1280x1024. I also had to lower texture and particle details, since my nVIDIA 7600 GS is rather old now. It behaves very well, with only a few FPS drops when the area gets crowded.

After setting up the computer and installing the Web server, you’re ready to
install MySQL. You need to install MySQL before installing PHP because you
need to provide the path to the MySQL software when you install PHP.
But before installing MySQL, be sure that you actually need to install it. It
might already be running on your computer, or it might be installed but not
running. For instance, many Linux distributions automatically install MySQL.
Here’s how to check whether MySQL is currently running:
Linux/Unix/Mac: At the command line, type the following:
ps –ax

The output should be a list of programs. Some operating systems (usually
flavors of Unix) have different options for the ps command. If the
above comment does not produce a list of the programs that are running,
type man ps to see which options you need to use.
In the list of programs that appears, look for one called mysqld.
Windows: If MySQL is running, you should see it in your system tray at
the bottom of your screen, possibly as a traffic signal with a green light.
If you cannot find an icon for it, it’s probably not running.
Even if MySQL isn’t currently running, it might be installed, just not started.

It's actually very simple but the legality of it depends on where you live. Better check out first if you are allowed to convert YouTube videos into mp3s.

At first, we have to get the video. The normal flash version is a reduced quality of the actual uploaded one. So we get the mp4 version instead. In order to do that, go to the YouTube video that you want to download.

•3 cups of peanut butter
•1/4 cup grounded toasted rice
•1/2 cup cooked bagoong alamang (anchovies)
•2 pieces onions, diced
•2 heads of garlic, minced
•4 tablespoons atsuete oil
•4 pieces eggplant, sliced 1 inch thick
•1 bundle Pechay (Bok choy) cut into 2 pieces
•1 bundle of sitaw (string beans) cut into 2″ long
•1 banana bud, cut similar to eggplant slices, blanch in boiling water
•1/2 cup oil
•8 cups of water
•Salt to taste

Directions:
•In a stock pot, boil beef and oxtail in water for an hour until cooked and tender. Strain and keep the stock.
•In a big pan or wok, heat oil and atsuete oil.
•Sauté garlic, onions until golden brown, then add the stock, toasted rice, beef, oxtail and peanut butter. Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes. Add salt to taste.

"Kalderetang Kambing (Goat Kaldereta)

Ingredients:
1 kilogram Goat meat
1 can button mushroom, sliced into halves
2 medium-sized onion, chopped
½ head of garlic, chopped
1 can liver spread
1 cup tomato sauce
1 pack kaldereta mix
8 peppercorns, crushed
2 medium sized green or ed bell pepper, cut into 1 inch square
2 medium sized potato, quartered
1 medium sized carrots, cut same size as potato
¼ cup soy sauce
3 siling labuyo or chili
3 bay leaves
Salt
Pepper

Directions:
1. Marinate goat meat in vinegar, a dash of salt and pepper for 5 to 10 minutes.
2. Drain the marinate sauce and stir fry meat until color changes to light brown. Set aside.
3. In a casserole pan, sauté garlic and onion. Add the fried meat and sauté for 2-3 more minutes.
4. Add soy sauce, tomato sauce and liver spread. Stir and cook for 3 to 5 minutes.
5. Add 3-4 cups of water, crushed pepper corns and bay leaf. Simmer for about 30 minutes until goat meat is tender.
6. Add potato, carrots, mushroom, siling labuyo and kaldereta mix diluted in ½ cup of water. Simmer for another 10 minutes or until vegetable are cooked and sauce thickens.
7. Add bell pepper, season with salt and cook another 30 seconds.
8. Serve hot with rice."

I am one of the thousand Pinoy who actually have seen and experienced the Beauty of Iligan City. Iligan was known as The Majestic City of Water Falls and also The Industrial Center of the South. There are more than 20 water falls in and around our place. Iligan has a 44 Barangays, Starting from Dalipuga to Buru-un.

Tinago Falls = (in English, "Hidden Falls") was known as a sanctuary of the weary souls. This waterfall is located in the middle of a forest, almost untouched by human hands. The way down is a real adventure with steps made of rocks and bars to hold onto which are somehow fixed on the rocks. I will assure you that you and your family will really enjoy this place..!!!

Mimbalot Falls = is a government property, you can visit it anytime for free. It is located at Buru-un, Iligan City at the back of the School of Fisheries

Limunsudan Falls = is a two-tiered water fall and the height of 870 feet with the lower part cascading alone and it is higher than Maria Christina Falls . Known as Philippines Hightest Water Fall and believed to be the Asia's highest Water Falls. Located at Rogongon, Iligan City. 55 kilometers from the City Proper.

Dodiongan Falls or Abaga Falls- located in barangay Bonbonon, Iligan City. well way back in high school I and my classmates went there to have a research. Even if we're so tired of walking for how many hours its very okay with us because of that wonderful Water Fall we saw "Abaga" a bisayan term ( in English "Shoulder¨) they named Abaga Falls because the falls form is like a body of a person. Between the two falling water is a stone its like the head of a man and the falling waters was the shoulder. That's why they named the water fall ABAGA.

Dalipuga Falls = located in Kalubihon Dalipuga, Iligan City

Maria Christina Falls = the most well known falls here in Iligan because of its natural beauty and granduer, 320 feet high, it is the primary source of power for the city's industries and for the whole Mindanao Region.

It is good for mountain hikings and overnight campings. There is also a small water fall featured on the way to the top of the mountain. The height of this mountain is 1,600 feet above sea level. It is ideal for adventurous people, hikers and mountaineers.

Timoga Swimming Pool= Iligans pride..! When summer comes Timoga Pools were so in demand we really love to swim there the cool and flowing water that keeps the swimming pool clean many people really loves to swim there because of the affordable price and a cool water that you really forget the heat of the Sun!! The objective of anonymous surfing then, is to conceal this information from web sites and other computers, and typically you would use an anonymous proxy server between you and the web site to accomplish this. When surfing anonymously, your web browser talks to the proxy server; the proxy server talks to the web site. Effectively this means, the web site does not know you; it knows only the anonymous proxy server.

You have a number of choices when it comes to anonymous surfing. You can use a free proxy server service; not my personal first choice – but that’s fodder for another article!

More reliable and safer, in my view, is to download and install a client application which manages the details of anonymous surfing for you.

One such application is OperaTor, a free utility that includes the Opera browser, the Privoxy Web proxy , and The Onion Router, which is a method used for anonymous Internet communication. All components launch simultaneously.

OperaTor, and the component pieces, does not require an installer and the utility can be installed and launched from a USB flash drive. This makes it ideal for surfing at public computers.

A process ID is a unique number that identifies a process, with that you can kill or terminate a running program on your server (see kill command).

ps aux Shows all system processes
ps aux --forest Shows all system processes like the above but organizes in a hierarchy that's very useful!

CONFIGURATION FILES Listing everything is beyond the scope of this article.
/etc This directory contains most of the basic Linux system-configuration Files.
/etc/init.d Contains the permanent copies of System V–style run-level scripts. These scripts are often linked to files in the /etc/rc?.d directories to have each service associated with a script started or stopped for the particular run level. The ? is replaced by the run-level number (0 through 6). (Slackware puts its run-level scripts in the /etc/rc.d directory.)
/etc/cron* Directories in this set contain files that define how the crond utility runs applications on a daily (cron.daily), hourly (cron.hourly), monthly (cron.monthly), or weekly (cron.weekly) schedule.
/etc/cups Contains files used to configure the CUPS printing service.
/etc/default Contains files that set default values for various utilities. For example, the file for the useradd command defines the default group number, home directory, password expiration date, shell, and skeleton directory
/etc/skel Any files contained in this directory are automatically copied to a user’s home directory when that user is added to the system.
/etc/mail Contains files used to configure your sendmail mail service.
/etc/security Contains files that set a variety of default security conditions for your computer.
/etc/sysconfig Contains important system configuration files that are created and maintained by various services (including iptables, samba, and most networking services).
/etc/passwd Holds some user account info including passwords (when not "shadowed").
/etc/shadow Contains the encrypted password information for users' accounts and optionally the password aging information.
/etc/xinetd.d Contains a set of files, each of which defines a network service that the xinetd daemon listens for on a particular port.
/etc/syslogd.conf The configuration file for the syslogd daemon. syslogd is the daemon that takes care of logging (writing to disk) messages coming from other programs to the system.
/var Contains variable data like system logging files, mail and printer spool directories, and transient and temporary files.
/var/log Log files from the system and various programs/services, especially login (/var/log/wtmp, which logs all logins and logouts into the system) and syslog (/var/log/messages, where all kernel and system program message are usually stored).
/var/log/messages System logs. The first place you should look at if your system is in trouble.
/var/log/utmp Active user sessions. This is a data file and as such it can not be viewed normally.
/var/log/wtmp Log of all users who have logged into and out of the system. The last command can be used to access a human readable form of this file.

Install Any Linux OS Without a CD/DVD Drive

Follow these easy steps to install any Linux OS using only a USB stick:
Step 1 - Prepare the USB stick:

1. Check to make sure your USB stick is lage enough for your desired OS (1gb should be enough for most).
2. Format the stick using a FAT32 file system, in some cases you might need to format it as a FAT16 file system.

Step 2 - Install UNetbootin:

1. For Windows users use this binary.
2. For Linux users use this binary.

Step 3 - Install your OS to the USB stick:

1. Bring up UNetbootin.
2. Select the OS you want from the download list or point it to your ISO if you already have it.
3. Select your USB stick.
4. Load the OS onto your USB stick.

Step 4 - Boot into your new OS:

1. Reboot your system and make sure to select your USB stick from the boot devices menu

5 Ways to Screencast Your Linux Desktop

Here are five popular ways to capture desktop screencast for Linux

1) Istanbul: Istanbul is one of the more widely used desktop recording software out there. You can download Istanbul from here. Debian and Fedora users should be able to install it from the repo. Istanbul has a very simple interface (or lack of). When you first start up Istanbul, you will see a small red button on your desktop panel.

Right click on the button and it will give you options and ways to record you desktop by window you choose or desktop area you select by mouse.

You can stop recording you session by left clicking on the record button, and it will prompt you save the screencast:

By default, Istanbul saves your video in Ogg format.

2) Wink: Wink gives you more control over you Screencast than any Linux screencast software I have tried, and the fact that it doesn’t actually takes videos in the conventional sense of taking videos of your desktop screen, it gives you more control over your video. Wink takes video by taking screenshots of your desktop in frames per second. If you set your Wink to take 20 frames per second and take one minute worth of screencast with wink, it will have roughly 1200 screenshots of your desktop in one minute, which you can edit one screenshot at a time giving you more control over the video. Wink saves the video in shockwave format which you can later convert into whatever format you wish to.

You can download wink from it’ website here.

Wink will not work with newer distros of Ubuntu 8.04, or any Linux distros with libexpat.so.1 file located in /usr/lib/. A temporary solution that worked for me was to simply rename the file to libexpat.so.0, even thoughI didn’t have any problem with my system after doing this and everything worked ok, it is not highly recommended as it might effect other program using this file. You can rename it back to it’s original format when you are done. A permanent solution would be to recompile the program and link it to the new libraries; or wait for it to be officially updated by the author.

To start doing screencast with Wink, start a new project with File –> New, and select the screen size you would like to record.

You will see that by default it capture 50 frames/second in Time capture Mode.

After selecting OK a window will pop up giving your shortcuts for video capture.

Select “Minimize To Tray”. From the desktop panel right click on the icon and select “Start Timed Capture”, to start capturing your desktop.

You can select “Stop Timed Capture” whenever you think you are done with your work. It will tell you how many frames have been captured.

To get your video you have to render all the image files into a video file. And now you have a video of your desktop.

3) Xvidcap: This is a nice little video capturing app that does the job, however for me it was a little too buggy for my liking. You can download xvidcap from here. When you start xvidcap, it will give you red square to work with, which represents the space that will be captured, you can drag the square to your liking, depending on how much you want to capture. To start capturing just click onthe red button. Other options including the ability to choose a screen area to capture and detach the frame area from the video capture selection. However if you select the whole desktop screen or large portion of the desktop screen, this will slow down your computer to a crawl.

4) vnc2swf: Another popular, but inconvenient, way to screencast desktop is to use vnc2swf to record desktop sessions. vnc2swf works by connecting to vncserver and recording sessions. Debian users can use this program by installing sudo apt-get install pyvnc2swf. Others can download from it’s website: http://www.unixuser.org/~euske/vnc2swf/

To start recording, assuming you have vnc server installed, just type this command in the terminal vnc2swf -o test.swf -N -S localhost:0 and it should pop up a simple window for recording purpose.

5) Recordmydesktop: Another fairly widely used desktop recording application which runs in command and has a graphical frontend, debian user can install both with apt-get, sudo apt-get install recordmydesktop gtk-recordmydesktop, others can download from their project page: http://sourceforge.net/projects/recordmydesktop. Recordmydesktop works the same way as Istanbul and has almost the same look and feel down to the desktop panel shortcut. But RMD has more advanced options that are missing in Istanbul. the options are self-explanatory and should be fairly easy to configure.

One of the most effective strategies to improve the quality of life for a client is a systematic approach for problem-solving

At the beginning of any psychotherapy, clients usually expect that the therapist will find an answer to all possible problems in life. However, in the course of therapy the clients learn to find their own solutions for their problems. He or she should use prior experiences in life and adapt useful strategies to find appropriate solutions in a structured and systematic way with problemsolving strategies.

It is always a very useful approach to think of successful strategies for problems in the past. Train yourself to adapt useful problem-solving techniques to new situations!

Here is one of many possible models of problem solving.

Problem identification What is my concern?
Goal definition What do I want to achieve or change?
Brainstorming What can I do?
Consequences What might happen?
Decision How should I do it?
Implementation Do it!
Evaluation Did it work?

These seven simple steps can be applied to nearly all kinds of problems in life. Let's go into detail with a problem of one of my clients:

Daniel is a 52 year old patient with depression and panic attacks. One of his major problems was to leave the house to go for a walk or consult the doctor or therapist.

1. Problem identification

Try to give a precise description of your problems. You should try to focus on behaviours or skill deficits.

2. Goal definition

You should try to set a precise goal of your efforts. This should be a realistic aim of improvement (not "I want to feel better"). Ask yourself: "What do I want to change or achieve right now?"

3. Brainstorming / Generation of alternatives.

Try to think of all possible ways to achieve your goal. Think of successful ways of solving problems or achieving your goals in the past. Use your creativity and do not restrict yourself in any way. Even nonsensical or unusual ways might be worth to consider.

Write all alternatives on a blank sheet of paper!

4. Consider all consequences.

Now it is time to think about the positive or negative consequences of all possible alternatives. Think about any outcome or difficulties of your approaches.

This step can be split into substeps:

What are the advantages? It is better to look at the advantages before looking at the disadvantages, since if you start looking at the disadvantages you may get so dissillusioned that you cannot think of any advantages.
Whare are the risks, what care is needed, what problems can occur?
How do you intuitively feel about the alternatives?

5. Make your choice of one possible alternative!

It is important to make a clear choice and define a time limit for an attempt to reach your goal.

6. Do it (Implementation of your decision)

Do not worry about being successful. Just do it and see what happens...

Ingredients

For the marinade:
1 cup Coke
1 cup brown sugar
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1/2 cup soy sauce
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup orange juice
1/4 cup ketchup
1/8 cup lemon juice
6 garlic cloves, minced
3 tablespoons oyster sauce
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes

4 lbs of pork shoulder or chicken thighs, cut into 1 inch cubes
Wooden skewers, soaked in water for at least 30 minutes before use.

Procedure

1. Place all marinade ingredients in a medium saucepan and whisk to combine. Simmer over low heat for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature.

2. Place chicken or pork cubes in a large Ziploc bag and pour marinade all over. Seal the bag, removing as much air as possible, and set in the refrigerator to marinate overnight, turning the bag over at least once during the process.

3. Light one chimney full of charcoal. When all the charcoal is lit and covered with gray ash, pour out and spread coals out evenly.

4. While the fire is lighting, thread meat onto the skewer. Each piece of meat should touch the next, but not pushed tightly together.

5. Grill directly over a hot fire, turning every 3 to 5 minutes until each side is nicely browned and the meat is cooked through.
